For three days, shells and mortars “flown and hissed over our heads, exploding all around us,” Anton, a Russian soldier based south of Bakhmut, told CNN. “We were hopping like rabbits under mortar rounds and bombs.”

Largely forgotten about today, the 1950s saw some extraordinary experiments involving aircraft carriers fitted with rubber flight decks, the idea being to launch and recover jet aircraft with no landing gear at all. While the thinking behind it might seem baffling in retrospect, the concept appeared to offer some key advantages at the time. However, unlike other revolutionary carrier aviation technologies that emerged in that period, the flexible deck was bound for the scrap heap.
The Battle of Chapultepec was a battle of the Mexican-American War that lasted from September 12 to September 14, 1847. After the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Mexico had to cede large parcels of its land to the United States, one of them being the once formidable Chapultepec fortress. With Mexican territory considerably reduced, it was now vulnerable to invasion from America. That’s to say nothing of its proximity to the capital, which meant that preserving it was an important strategic priority for the government.

France’s Rubis class nuclear-powered attack submarine Perle has finally returned to active service after nearly four years. Perle had begun undergoing a routine maintenance and refit cycle in 2019, but then suffered a devastating fire in 2020 that required extensive repairs. This included grafting on a ‘new’ front half taken from a decommissioned Rubis class submarine, the ex-Saphir. The result is a unique submarine that is slightly longer than a standard Rubis.

The impact of the war in Ukraine has been felt well beyond the shores of the European continent, creating increasing connections between the Indo-Pacific and European security theaters.
