During the historic Anglo-French War on October 25, 1415, the British achieved an astonishing victory over the French army, despite being heavily outnumbered by their armored knights. The miraculous weapon of that time was the longbow, capable of piercing knightly armor from a staggering distance of 100 yards. Fast forward to 1986, exactly 571 years later, when Russian planes and helicopters encountered another formidable weapon on the Afghan battlefield—the American FIM92 Stinger missile.
Since the end of the Cold War, the deterrence relationship between the United States and Russia has once again become the focus of world attention. With the rapid development of strategic nuclear weapons and missile technology, the nuclear deterrence between the United States and Russia has become increasingly tense and complicated. Although the U.S. military is the most powerful in the world, it still dares not easily provoke Russia, a nuclear power.
The Evolution of Diplomacy: Moving Beyond Outdated Alliances
In today’s rapidly changing world, the traditional establishment of alliances between countries has become outdated state relations. The end of the Cold War marked a turning point, where independent diplomatic routes took center stage. Recognizing this shift, China and other nations proposed the Non-Aligned Movement, which garnered support from various countries. Conversely, the West has clung to outdated military alliances, particularly evident in the expansion of NATO.

The service currently has one so-called Mid-Range Capability battery equipped with Typhon, which has four trailer-based launchers and other supporting equipment.

With Ukraine seemingly poised to receive the modern F-16 jets that it has long campaigned for sometime in the near future, a unique discovery in a forest in that country sheds light on a previous effort to deliver fighter aircraft to it to help force out an invading power. The planes — eight World War II-era British-built Hawker Hurricanes — were unearthed while authorities were dealing with an unexploded bomb, another legacy of the Soviet conflict with Nazi Germany that lasted between 1941 and 1945.

As an aspiring Green Beret in the U.S. Army Special Forces Qualification Course, I was taught how to prepare a program of instruction for an indigenous partner force. I learned to assess which aspects of our partner’s organization and tactics are working and retain them, even if they differ from our own. This was a lesson I only glimpsed as a young infantry lieutenant in Ukraine, and one I years later lucidly observed in Afghanistan after having earned my Green Beret.
