It may have caught the Red Army by surprise in 1941, but despite big advances early on, the Soviet Union was a big place with a large population and a massive workforce. American Lend-Lease Aid was critical in its success too, but a key consideration for Nazi losses was the wreck they left behind.
The German policy toward its conquered populations of Eastern Europe was far from benevolent.

So what would it take for a 56-year-old man to demand to land in the first wave? With his cane?
A Roosevelt. It would take a Roosevelt. Specifically, it took Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt III, whose son also landed that day. And he earned a Medal of Honor for his actions and promotion to major general and division command.
Leadership in the military isn’t just giving orders to make the walls shake and make those fresh recruits’ knees wobble. It involves a subtle blend of charisma, decisiveness and courage. That’s to say nothing of the need for a dash of good old-fashioned insanity. This unique blend often results in leaders who can make decisions faster than a private can hide that phone they’re not supposed to have. So let’s take a look at what goes into military leadership.

The specter of a Russian-Chinese partnership is deeply threatening to the United States, not only because it makes U.S. military planning more challenging, but also because it raises the possibility of two formidable adversaries joining forces to counter U.S. interests and potentially working in concert to attack U.S allies.
