On the second day of an attempted coup that has the world watching warily, Wagner boss and now enemy of the Russian state Yevgeny Prigozhin and the core of his forces remain entrenched in Rostov, while other elements are now holding Voronezh, which sits between Rostov and Moscow along the M4 highway. Additional Wagner forces are said to have splintered off and continued on a push to the Russian capital. Now, it appears that some of those elements have come under fire.
The Russian military is carrying out an anti-terrorist operation in the southern province of Voronezh in response to a rebellion by the Wagner group.
“The weapons of the Wagner mercenary group are moving through the territory of the Lipetsk region,” Governor Igor Artamonov said on Telegram. “I would like to remind you that people are advised not to leave their homes or travel by any means of transport.” Lipetsk is located about 400 km south of Moscow, Russia.
Countries bordering Russia have tightened security and are closely monitoring events. “The situation is serious,” said the Swedish Foreign Minister.
Several European countries, in addition to NATO, have reported this Saturday to be attentive to what is happening inside Russia, where an uprising by Wagner’s paramilitaries threatens to put the government of Vladimir Putin in trouble. A spokesman for the military alliance told the EFE agency that they are “monitoring the situation” triggered by the rebellion of the mercenaries.
Moscow: Rebellious Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin today claimed that he had taken control of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don as part of an attempt to oust the military leadership amid what the authorities said was an armed mutiny.
Here are 10 facts about this big story:
Security in several major Russian cities, including the capital Moscow, has been tightened after the Wagner group claimed control of the military headquarters of the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.
Terming it “internal treason”, Vladimir Putin vowed the harshest punishment against those rebelling.
In today’s episode, Mike looks at the slow progress of the Ukrainian offensive and what, if anything, it means for the course of the war. He also discusses Russia’s defensive strategy and how grateful he is not to be in Yevgeny Prigozhin’s head. Mike and Nick recorded this show on Friday, June 23rd before the Wagner insurrection began to escalate. We will have more podcasts and articles on the recent events in Russia in the coming days and weeks.
A column of vehicles from the paramilitary group is apparently advancing toward Moscow without encountering resistance. Yevgeny Prigozhin has denied a coup attempt.
Military sources reported to the Reuters news agency on Saturday that the column of vehicles from the Wagner mercenary company had reached the Voronezh region, where it had taken control of all military installations without any clashes. The eponymous city of Voronezh is located just 500 kilometers from Moscow, which seems to be the ultimate goal of the paramilitaries. Shortly before, they had occupied Rostov.
The head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner has promised to “go all the way” to overthrow the Russian military leadership hours after the Kremlin accused him of “armed rebellion.”
Yevgeny Prigozhin said that his Wagner fighters had crossed the border from Ukraine into Russia, entering the city of Rostov-on-Don.
Prigozhin claimed that his men would destroy anyone who got in their way. The local governor urged citizens to remain calm and stay in their homes.
Prigozhin claimed that his forces had shot down a Russian military helicopter that “opened fire on a civilian convoy.

Yevgenzy Prigozhin, the head of the Kremlin-aligned Wagner Group, said that his fighters have crossed into Russia from Ukraine as part of a mission to topple the heads of the Russian military. Prigozhin denies he’s carrying out a coup, but instead vowed a “march for justice” in response to an alleged attack on his mercenary force. Now Russian leaders are calling for his arrest, while Wagner fights have allegedly entered the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

One of Germany’s largest armored vehicle manufacturers, Rheinmetall, claims that their new main battle tank, the KF-51 Panther, will surpass the Russian T14 Armata tank in all respects. Let’s examine the KF-51 Panther versus T14 Armata comparison to verify this claim.

Flamethrowers conjure up some fairly provocative images. The horrifying trenches of World War 1. The island-hopping Pacific campaigns of World War 2. If you want to go the fictional route, think of Ripley confronting the xenomorph queen at the end of Aliens.
Now picture one attached to a robotic dog.
This is the idea behind the “Thermonator,” which is basically a robotic dog with a flamethrower strapped to its back. This fire-spewing beast is designed by Throwflame, a company that manufactures, well, electrically-powered flamethrowers.

The Pentagon needs to evolve its approach to homeland defense and focus on detecting and identifying potential threats in all domains as early as possible, according to Gen. Glen VanHerck, commander of U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command.
Speaking during a webinar hosted by the Mitchell Institute on Thursday, VanHerck said that homeland defense will look “vastly different” in the future.

In March 2022, on behalf of France and Spain, the Joint Organization for Armament Cooperation [OCCAr] awarded Airbus Helicopters the contract to develop the Tiger Standard 3 attack helicopter. The challenge at that time was to carry out the mid-life renewal of this aircraft in order to keep it at the maximum operational level beyond 2050. This meant adapting it to collaborative combat.
However, the Military Planning Bill [LPM] 2024-30 bypasses this new rule for the Tiger.

American Army leaders and other Pentagon officials have high hopes for the U.S. military’s future warfighting paradigm known as Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2). A key piece of the puzzle, and a challenge that must be overcome, will be connecting European sensors, weapons and communications capabilities into an integrated allied network — and using artificial intelligence to make it all happen.

The competition to provide the U.S. Air Force with its Next Generation Air Dominance, or NGAD, stealth sixth-generation crewed tactical jet is reportedly down to two prime contractors or teams of contractors. A final decision on what is now assumed to be a winner-takes-all competition is expected sometime next year and, perhaps most intriguingly, there are said to be no fewer than three NGAD demonstrators now in existence. These latest revelations come from a recent podcast from the Defense & Aerospace Report, which you can find here.

On June 20 a U.S. Coast Guard made a rare solo transit through the Taiwan Strait a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken ended a 2-day visit to Beijing where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
It is not uncommon for the U.S. military to send ships through the Taiwan Strait, however, U.S. Navy warships usually transit the Strait, not Coast Guard cutters. While it is not uncommon for U.S. cutters to sail through the waterway, they are typically accompanied by a Navy vessel.

In Hyesan, North Korea, a police officer stopped a motorist in 2022. When the driver was unable to show the officer his official documents, the officer demanded a bribe of gasoline and cash. In a country as repressive as North Korea, it would normally be a very bad situation for the driver. Instead, it turned out to be a debacle for the cop.
After detaining the man for two hours, the motorist drove over the police motorcycle, and then proceeded to beat the cop down until he lay unconscious and bleeding on the ground.

The contract was awarded this month, Jean-Michel Negret, command chain product line manager for Thales, told Janes.
Tucked into the House Armed Service Committee’s approved amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2024 is a provision that would require the Pentagon to create and implement an oversight process to identify, correct or retire artificial intelligence capabilities used by the military but deemed not responsible by the government’s standards.
